Stand Against the Capture of Wild Marine Mammals!

Would you rather view a lone, unhealthy seal in a zoo or aquarium tank or watch a healthy group of wild seals frolicking in the ocean?

Wouldn’it be nice to hear about seals thriving in the wild instead of suffering in aquaria and zoos? It’s not likely to happen while marine mammals can still become tank toys.

Marine mammals on public display in an aquarium or zoo in Canada may have been taken from the wild. They have to acclimate to their surroundings and live separated from their family groups in chlorinated tanks. As a result of the shocking change, captured marine mammals don’t even behave like they would in the wild.

The current Canadian laws on marine mammal capture allow for executive decisions that are not in the animals’ favor. Even if they were meant to be returned to the wild after a certain timeframe, the animals may never make it back and could be euthanized. Researchers have warned the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans about the risks for years – it’s time they took animal safety seriously.

Urge Canada’s Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield to outlaw the capture of marine mammals from the wild for zoos and aquaria!

Thanks for taking action,
