Slavery Still Exists in the United States

Half of all fresh tomatoes in the U.S. come from Florida farms. This region that feeds the country has a dirty secret; working conditions there are so bad it’s referred to as America’s ‘ground zero for slavery.’

The bounty of Florida’s tomato farms wouldn’t be possible without the laborers performing the back-breaking work of harvesting the crop. The Fair Food Program is a new initiative that protects the basic human rights of these laborers who feed the country and enforces a policy of zero tolerance for slavery on tomato farms.Unfortunately Publix Super Markets, a major U.S. supermarket chain, refuses to support the program.

The great irony of the situation is that Publix prides itself on making Fortune’s ‘Best Companies to Work For’ list. It seems they only care about the working conditions of the employees in their stores. If you happen to work in the fields picking tomatoes for them to sell, your wellbeing is no longer their concern.

There is no middle ground when it comes to slavery; you’re either fighting against it or enabling it.

Tell Publix CEO William Crenshaw that he is enabling slavery by refusing to support the Fair Food Program.
