The oil has been \u00a0discovered in the least developed region of Kenya, where basic\u00a0infrastructure like roads, energy lines, schools, hospitals, police posts etc are inadequate\u00a0to the current needs. The first reaction to the discovery was euphoria and delights that started from the grass root levels and sprung to the corridors\u00a0of \u00a0power.\u00a0\u201cThis is the first time Kenya has made such discovery and it is very good<em> <\/em>news\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 as President Mwai Kibaki announced to the public. TV stations showed \u00a0dancing and cheering crowds of people living in the area the British company \u2013\u00a0<em>Tullow Oil<\/em>\u00a0made discovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">But when initial excitement faded out a number of questions were raised out.\u00a0The first warning came from\u00a0the members of civil society and media, who reminded the fate of local communities in oil reach regions of Nigeria, Chad or Angola. The\u00a0<em>black gold<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 nickname for oil was changed to\u00a0<em>black curse\u00a0<\/em>in the mentioned states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">The local communities can watch the precious commodity leaving their land,\u00a0making wealth for multinational companies and local oligarch, while what remains in the area of discovery is natural environment polluted by oil spillage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Hopefully, the Kenyan government, as well as the local administration,\u00a0fully understands the challenges. Several politicians and technocrats stated that the discovery brings opportunities and challenges as well. The law that regulates oil discovery and extraction is from 1986, and there is no doubt has to be changed. Roads and electricity supply line must be built if any oil is\u00a0to\u00a0be extracted and transported to the refinery. The next challenge is which\u00a0model of managing oil Kenya will adopt, with strong inclinations from officials towards the Norwegian and Dubai\u00a0system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Regional politics are also to be taken\u00a0into account, since the discovery could bring rivalry with neighbouring Uganda, something that both countries wish to avoid. The role of multinational companies in the oil production and distribution is another\u00a0important\u00a0issue to be tackled.
